We're kicking of the whale-watching season with exciting news ✨

One of the sperm whales seen near Andenes, Norway, had been photographed in the Azores 10 years earlier!

We continue to thank researcher Lisa Steiner for her extensive work matching whale flukes from all over the North Atlantic Ocean. This gives us valuable insight into the long lives of these animals! 🐳

This week, we wrapped up whale watching season of 2023 with a wonderful final safari! With only a few hours between sunrise and sunset, these final trips are lit with beautiful soft light. Thank you everyone for joining and following Whalesafari's 35th year of whale watching! 🐳🐬🙏

Psst... did you know that we also organize northern lights tours?
Here you are some pictures from the Aurora Walk last Monday.
The moonlight made the walk magical, and at the cabin tasty food was waiting...

Whereas female sperm whales are highly social and live in family groups, males are believed to become increasingly solitary as they get older. On rare occasions though, we can observe adult male sperm whales surfacing and diving together. These associations are sighted most frequently in winter and spring. This may reflect companionship, the presence of a lot of food in that location, or both! 🐳🦑 ... See MoreSee Less

The weather forecast for tomorrow looks quite good and we are looking forward to the safari! Will we see #spermwhales? Or other species? We never know for sure, but we have seen whales or dolphins on ~98% of our trips this year 🐋

It’s great! Just do it!🐳🐋

Kommer på fredag, gleder meg masse på turen og håper på hvaler 😊

I've been there many times and I miss it very much 😞

Ich war im August mit Euch draußen, ein unvergesslich schöner Moment 🐳

🕵️ Like detectives do with fingerprints, we look at patterns on the edge of #spermwhale flukes, and try to recognize them!
🐳The whale seen today has been observed here many times since summer 2011.
Can you guess where some of his scars and scratches come from?

I think the scars are from fights with giant squids. Am I correct?

Ville elske at have mine børnebørn med på hval safari🙏

Wij hebben een geweldige ervaring gehad 15 september. 6 orca's gezien en een potvis. Prachtig❤️ zo genoten en de bemanning was zo enthousiast. Dikke 10

The fin whale is the second largest animal in the world, surpassed only by the blue whale. These 20+ meter long giants have been nicknamed "the greyhounds of the sea" as they can travel at speeds up to 45 km/h. It is not uncommon to observe a fin whale blow in the distance, and then suddenly having it surface close to the boat!

#whales and people are definitely curious about each other sometimes.
What do you think this #pilotwhale was checking us out for?

(P.S. no matter how curious we humans get, we must always leave the whales their space).

Oh my God wat e nice Shy. Bravo Conny👀💋

On days like today, when the fog is so thick you can’t even see the harbour, there are other amazing animals here on Andøya to enjoy 🦌

Called 'Elg' in Norwegian, the moose are the largest land animals found in Norway. They can reach a shoulder height of a stunning 2.3 meters! With antlers that span up to 1.5 meters 👀

Playful and sociable, Risso's Dolphins are quite new to the more northern latitudes, such as here in Andenes at 69°North.

Here you can see an older male with a white front body and larger size, swimming with at least one calf. The calves have pinkish/ brown faces and are of course smaller.

Risso's Dolphins also have very visible scars, and this helps us to recognise them. They turn whiter as the scars accumulate over time and the skin loses pigmentation.

Super!

Spy-Hopping Orcas! So, who is looking at who? 🙂

#orcas are able to position themselves vertically to visually inspect their surroundings, this is called #spyhopping, and on this day it was us they were inspecting 👀 👋

One of our guides, Sté Phane, was quick with the camera and managed to catch a few amazing photos of this behaviour!

It's always very exciting for us when we see a whale that is known to us. Last week Jade van Dam, one of our Marine Biologists, spotted this #spermwhale and captured his fluke on camera. She was then able to identify him!

He's known to us as ID_0570 but, being a regular visitor to #andenes, it's time we gave him a name. We think Batman suits him 🙂
Can you see the resemblance?

Glenn still around?

After two months continuously swirling over the horizon, the sun has started to set also at 69° North. But evenings are still very long, and the late-summer flowers are blooming everywhere. Do you know how these pink flowers are called?

No come si chiamano?

In Alaska they call them "fireweeds"

Das sind schmalblättrige Weidenröschen.
