After a long trip out to sea with rain and wind, as well as spotting sperm whales of course! 🐋... we were also rewarded with a beautiful rainbow on our way back to the harbour 🌈

On days like today, when the fog is so thick you can’t even see the harbour, there are other amazing animals here on Andøya to enjoy 🦌

Called 'Elg' in Norwegian, the moose are the largest land animals found in Norway. They can reach a shoulder height of a stunning 2.3 meters! With antlers that span up to 1.5 meters 👀

Playful and sociable, Risso's Dolphins are quite new to the more northern latitudes, such as here in Andenes at 69°North.
Here you can see an older male with a white front body and larger size, swimming with at least one calf. The calves have pinkish/ brown faces and are of course smaller.
Risso's Dolphins also have very visible scars, and this helps us to recognise them. They turn whiter as the scars accumulate over time and the skin loses pigmentation.

Spy-Hopping Orcas! So, who is looking at who? 🙂
#orcas are able to position themselves vertically to visually inspect their surroundings, this is called #spyhopping, and on this day it was us they were inspecting 👀 👋
One of our guides, Sté Phane, was quick with the camera and managed to catch a few amazing photos of this behaviour!

It's always very exciting for us when we see a whale that is known to us. Last week Jade van Dam, one of our Marine Biologists, spotted this #spermwhale and captured his fluke on camera. She was then able to identify him!
He's known to us as ID_0570 but, being a regular visitor to #andenes, it's time we gave him a name. We think Batman suits him 🙂
Can you see the resemblance?

After two months continuously swirling over the horizon, the sun has started to set also at 69° North. But evenings are still very long, and the late-summer flowers are blooming everywhere. Do you know how these pink flowers are called?

⚠️ Due to roadworks, the road FV 82 between Dverberg and Skarstein is closed between 7 AM and 7 PM until 10th August. We encourage our guests to take into account the longer driving time when planning their journey to Andenes.

The classic sperm whale dive! 📸
Whale watching is a game of patience - here our skilled captain and crew followed this sperm whale while he was fishing in the deep waters beneath us, waiting for him to come up for air.
Our patience paid off and we were rewarded with an amazing observation! 🐋
But how do we know where they are? Can you guess? 🎧

Risso's dolphins! 🤩
It takes some luck to see these cetaceans off #andøya, as they normally live in the open ocean further south.
Where do they come from, and what brings them here?
Fascinating questions still to be answered!

The big swells in the open ocean restricted our range of action to the Andfjord today. And action was what we got, when we found a pod of #orcas feeding close to shore!
When you are searching whales, it pays off to be patient and go the extra nautical mile 🐬

In the waters off #andoya you can see 10 different species of whales, dolphins and porpoises. #spermwhales and #orcas are the most known, but do you know the other ones? 🐬🐋🐳 ... See MoreSee Less
